How Does an Intermittent Pilot Ignition Device Operate

An intermittent pilot ignition device is a small, but vital, part of a building’s HVAC system. It is responsible for igniting the pilot light in the furnace, which in turn ignites the main burners. Without the intermittent pilot ignition, the furnace would not be able to heat the building. When the thermostat calls for heat, the 780 series control simultaneously initiates ignition sparking and opens the pilot valve portion of the gas valve.

Difference Between Interrupted & Intermittent Ignition

There are two types of ignition systems used in HVAC systems: interrupted ignition and intermittent ignition. Interrupted ignition systems provide a constant source of ignition, while intermittent ignition systems only provide ignition when needed. The Robertshaw 780-715 lockout ignition control provides 90 seconds of spark, followed by a six-minute time delay (purge) between ignition attempts.
